Create an Environment
Goal
Create a new environment in your tenant so makers have an isolated place to build and run apps.
Prerequisites
- You are signed in to the Admin Control Center as a platform administrator.
Steps
- Open the Environments page from the left navigation.
- Select New.
- Enter a Name. Names are unique within your tenant.
- Choose a Tier: Development, Test or Production. The tier can't be changed later.
- Select Add. The new environment appears in the list with the status Active once it is ready.
You don't enter an address. It is made from the name (HR Pilot becomes hr-pilot), with -2
added if another environment already has it. To change it, select the environment, choose
Edit and change Address. Every bookmark and integration that uses the old address stops
working.
What happens behind the scenes
A new, isolated data area is created for this environment, physically separated from every other environment's data. It starts with one solution, Main, and the standard tables: Account, Contact, and the tables that hold your tenant's users, roles, teams and organisation chart.
The tier decides three things:
- Production never accepts a solution's demonstration rows on import.
- Only Development runs a custom app or control served from a developer's own machine.
- Test and Production are created with Approval set to Yes. It records that imports should be approved; imports are not held for approval yet.
Troubleshooting
- "An environment named … already exists." — a environment with that name is already present in the tenant. Choose a different name.
- The status shows Failed — the environment's data area could not be created. Delete the failed environment and try again; if it keeps failing, contact your platform operator.
